WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS!
We are pleased that you have chosen Califon as your new home. Califon is a wonderful, caring community in which to live and raise a family. Our town offers its residents a beautiful historic downtown to shop and dine, located right next to the South Branch of the Raritan River. There are also many dining and shopping options in our “highway district” on County Rt. 513. You can find almost everything you need, right in our little one square mile Borough and, if we don’t have it, nearby larger towns are only a short, scenic ride away.
The Borough is the proud home of Califon Public School for Pre-K to 8th grade. Califon School offers a caring and nurturing environment from the Administration & teaching staff, resulting in an excellent quality of education for our children. This excellence in education is continued at the blue ribbon regional high school; North Hunterdon-Voorhees H.S. District; located in Lebanon Twp.
Califon offers many boards and committees that residents can join and contribute to, making our community even more vital. From the Planning Board, Board of Health, Parks Committee, Recreation Committee, Environmental Committee and more. Wherever your interests lie, you can meet and work with fellow residents, have fun, and enrich the community. There are so many events to participate in during the year and you’ll find many of them listed on our calendar. Just this past year, Califon celebrated its 100th year anniversary with a 3-day weekend full of events and activities organized by the Recreation Committee, who worked to put together a celebration that was unprecedented in scope and excitement.
Califon has a well-established historic district, both locally and on the State Historic Register. Your home may actually be on it! Many of the homes in our historic district retain the character of their period, and the Historic Society, along with the Historic Preservation Commission, do their part to help residents maintain the historic charm and integrity of their homes.
Califon is fortunate to be surrounded by natural beauty, from the rolling hills, rivers, streams and meadows…nature in all of its glory. For those who love the outdoors, there’s a lot to explore. The Columbia Trail offers amazing (and very easy) hiking from High Bridge to Long Valley, or you can fish the South Branch of the Raritan River. Ken Lockwood Gorge, easily accessed from town, is known throughout the country for its amazing trout fishing. Cycling, cross-country skiing, walking, birding–so many vistas, wildlife and water fowl to discover. It’s truly a very special place on the earth; all here for you to enjoy.
As a new resident, you will most likely have many questions, which the staff at the Municipal Building on Academy St. will be happy to answer for you. Come visit the municipal offices at the historic original one-room schoolhouse for if you have questions regarding dog licensing; voter registration; taxes; local government issues; licensing for marriages, raffles; new resident resources; historic district information; emergency services and any other municipal-related queries you may have. The committed and caring staff wish to make life in our special Califon community as comfortable and welcoming as possible.
